Certain conditions may require tooth extraction. We may suggest tooth extraction when the following circumstances occur:
- A tooth is severely decayed or damaged
- A large portion of the tooth or surrounding bone has been destroyed by infection
- There is not enough room for all of the teeth in the mouth
The wisdom teeth (third molars) often fall under the last category listed above because they are typically the last teeth to erupt. If there is not enough space to erupt properly, the wisdom teeth might become impacted (stuck in the gums and bone). Impacted wisdom teeth can cause multiple dental problems, including an increased risk for tooth decay and periodontal disease. In most instances, we recommend that you have your wisdom teeth removed before they contribute to any of these problems.
